I have a rare motor neuron disease called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia which causes my lower legs to twitch, tighten and weaken.

The Bikram Yoga series is a godsend for me. Stretching my muscles in the hot room greatly reduces the tension in my legs helping me to move better, feel better, and sleep better at night. My disease is like having restless leg syndrome on steroids, but on days I do class I go to bed at night and I’m AT REST. Sweet dreams for me.

Also, I get my cardio. These are beginning postures, but in a hot room, and after 90 minutes you walk (waddle) out of there feeling like you ran sprints for an hour. It’s a wonderful workout for slower moving people, and the teachers are very understanding. I just hold onto the ballet bar in the back for balance in some of the postures and don’t expect to look like anyone else in there.

The final benefit is that it helps me deal with the anxiety and depression of losing my ability to move. It’s only been in the past few years that I started having trouble with my legs, and there’s a tendency to want to hide away and sulk; but I go to class daily, and feel wonderful as a result.

Someday I might be rolling in on a wheel chair but I will never stop doing Bikram Yoga. – Corby

I started practicing Bikram Yoga in 2004 while I was working two jobs and commuting to L.A. for an intensive doctoral program on the weekends 😕 Crazy, right?
But the yoga probably kept me from going crazy.

At that time, I could only make it to class 2 or 3 times per week, but I jealously protected my yoga time. It was the best workout I’d ever found.

The ICP training program required that I also participate in a “training analysis”: psychoanalytic sessions four times per week. Emotions were stirred. Transformation was in motion.

But that was nothing compared to my recent experience. My teacher encouraged me to do 100 classes in 100 days.

Whoa.

I’ve long been fascinated by the work of “changing the things that cannot be changed.”
Now I’ve been granted the magic to do it.

The yoga practice leaves me full of joy.
My mind is sharper at work.
Intuition and dreams are amazing.

I have abundant energy.
My aches and pains went away.
An old, chronic knee injury fixed itself.
Blood pressure and blood sugar numbers returned to normal.

Old PTSD symptoms lost their grip.
Worries and negative thought patterns became easy to shut down.
Aliveness thrives.

And, best of all, I’ve found a loving, healthy, supportive family of kindhearted yogis.

What a gift.

Hi Jim, I first joined Bikram at Daly City Bikram Yoga a couple days before your presentation there last year (Feb. 2012). I just knew I had to come to your speech – and it was amazing. I really appreciated all the stories, information, references and details that you shared. You went later than the allotted time and I was super grateful for it….I really have had such an amazing experience with Bikram yoga and honestly I COULD NOT even stand properly when I started, let alone do the breathing. I do intuitive counseling and healing work with others (and of course myself) and it has been so interesting to see the energy shifts that occur in class and because of the practice….I am so looking forward to speaking with you, hearing your lecture and doing the posture clinic.

Hello Jim, ….I was amazed at how I felt the following day of Yoga. It was a very different feeling from when I use to do long distance running in preparation for marathons. I felt truly “WONDERFUL” the following day – no pain but some tightness in specific areas (especially the upper rib cage & abdomen area, thighs, legs, etc. but no back pain at all!!! I even went for a 3 mile hike the following day. I will stop by to purchase a book and to pay for my classes since I want to get enrolled as soon as I possibly can! I am honored to have met you! I especially wish to thank you for your words of wisdom. You are truly a remarkable individual!!!!! Again, thank you so very much.

She has come back to practicing regularly. She pretty much hasn’t missed a week since! She says you just got through to her and she understood that she “had” to do it for her health. I really appreciate how you inspired her and just wanted to let you know! Thank you again and talk to you soon!

Hi Jim, I hope you had an easy and restful flight back. We have been thinking about so much since you left. What we’ve learned in and out of the yoga room is so valuable and we are working as a team to spread it wide and without distortion! It’s been fun to hear and see the effect on our students, teachers and of course one another 🙂 There’s a buzz in the air!! It feels great to be connected to you and have shared this weekend. I know Henri and I both look forward to more times with you in the future. He sooner than I; as he re-certifies in May. We will be sure to come visit with Baby Leite sometime soon! Thank you and Love form all of us at BYH!

I was one of the people in the seminar you did at las vegas, at the green valley studio the almost 14 hrs spent with you seemed almost like eternity when i heard about them, but went by like a wink the insight you provided will be part of me for the rest of my life wrote this on facebook wanted to share it with you Life is just an installments of moments….. so this Valentines.. I decided to treat myself…I enrolled for the Jim Kallett’s Bikram Yoga retreat… 2 days of Intense yoga…. Last night it was a 2 hour seminar that became 4 and we were still glued to our seats in awe of Jim because the way he amalgamated Bikram yoga, with philosophy and theology… it simply took things to a new level, the insight was absolutely out of this world. Then today 10 hrs of seminar, posture clinic and a class…simply mindblowing….yes it was a really long day but the hyperoxygenation provided by bikram yoga postures…I guess made us sustain. Jim seemed like a goldsmith twisting our bodies into beautiful shapes..like a baker who rolls the dough into lovely pretzels…I was able to do postures I could never dream of…the way he makes you believe U can do it… is very convincing..The mind body connection he talks of…works… The best part of the entire 14 hours was the way he blended anatomy with physiology on one side then took us into the nitty gritty of the yoga behind it. The Bhagwata Gita and Mahabharata were talked of and the entire experience was very holistic. I love when every aspect of the subject is encompassed in one talk…. I feel enriched, enlightened and more!!!
